Knights Receive Bid to USCAA Tournament
Southern Virginia women’s soccer has accepted a bid to the USCAA National Women’s Soccer Championships, which will be held at Vermont Tech from Oct. 30 to Nov. 1.
The Knights are 6-5-1 with two games remaining in the regular season. As of Oct. 15 they are ranked No. 1 in the USCAA standings. Under the guidance of second-year head coach Matt Grawrock, Southern Virginia has seen a complete turnaround from last season’s 5-10-0 team that failed to qualify for the tournament.
Sophomore Courtney Montagna and freshmen Melanee Guymon and Lauren Jensen are tied for the team lead in goals scored with five apiece. Guymon leads the team with four assists for a team-high 14 points.
Freshman defender Tamara Nagle and sophomore goalkeeper Arianne Johnson lead a Southern Virginia defense that has recorded four shutouts and allowed just one goal in four others.
The Knights have recorded victories this season against Trinity, Christendom, Lincoln (Pa.), Columbia Union, Mary Baldwin and Bluefield. They will look to improve to 7-5-1 on Monday at Randolph College in Lynchburg, Virginia. The regular season concludes on Oct. 27 at Lees McCrae.
Southern Virginia has a rich tradition at the USCAA National Tournament with four titles (1998, 1999, 2005, 2006) and second-place finishes from 2000 to 2004.
